WEBTOON Comics You Should Check Out
I haven’t been in much of a reading mood last month. Novels don’t interest me, memoirs are too intense, and essay collections are harder to grasp. I’m deep in reading burnout territory.
When I get in this mood, I switch gears; I watch a show I’ve been meaning to check out, I play one of the many games I’m stuck in the middle of (by God I will finish Dragon Age: Origins before the year is over), and I catch up on WEBTOON comics.
I read some of the big ones on the platform (My Giant Nerd Boyfriend, Heartstopper, and Books of Adam come to mind) but I don’t want to talk about those comics. I want to talk about the ones that I found or stumbled across the website that I feel deserve more attention. Here is a short list of some comics I would recommend to anyone new to WEBTOON.
Waffles and Pancakes by DT Saranya
If your brand of humor is as random as mine can be, then this slice-of-life comic might be up your alley. I don’t remember how I came across this one, but I quickly fell in love with the main characters and close friends, Aiden and Kaia. And even though there are so many hilarious moments to be found in this comic, there are a lot of tender moments as well. It’s a great comic about platonic friendships and deranged, bra-chewing kitty antics.
Elf and Warrior by AC Stuart and Victor Rosas II
I had stepped away from this one when it went on hiatus, and when I returned to it, the comic was completed. I wasn’t sure how this comic was going to end, but I wasn’t expecting this really funny fantasy romp to hit me in the feels so hard.
In hindsight, this is definitely one of the more ambitious reads I ever read on the site. There are multiple storylines and flashbacks going on that don’t seem to connect at first, but as the main story progresses, you begin to see the dots connect. The story can get pretty dark at times, but it’s offset with relentless optimism and hope that things will be better.
